French Press Photograph of Walter Schirra and Thomas Stafford in Gemini VI-A, circa 1965.
This original vintage press photograph captures Walter Schirra and Thomas Stafford inside the Gemini VI-A spacecraft, one of the best-known missions of the Gemini program. NASA records confirm that Schirra and Stafford were the Gemini VI-A crew and that the spacecraft launched on December 15, 1965 to complete the landmark rendezvous with Gemini VII.
The photograph retains its period French caption and reverse press-agency stamp, giving it added documentary interest.
Caption translation:
“Two U.S. spacemen, Walter Schirra and Thomas Stafford, left by Gemini VI from Cape Kennedy to rendezvous with Gemini VII.”Reverse rights translation:
“This photograph may not be reproduced or displayed without payment to A.D.N.P. of the corresponding rights.”The reverse identifies the French distributor as Agence Diffusion Nationale Photographique (A.D.N.P.), E. Lamy, Paris.
Why this piece stands out:
- authentic space-race era press photograph
- both Gemini VI-A astronauts visible
- French news-agency provenance
- strong capsule-interior image
- collectible across NASA, aviation, and Cold War categories
Condition is good vintage overall, with ordinary wear from age and newsroom handling, including light edge wear, surface marks, and curl.
After 5 decades in this industry, and with me now vintage too, I still appreciate original press photos because they preserve history in a direct and unpolished way. This one does exactly that.
