The Art Of The Frame: American Frames of the Arts and Crafts Period, Eli Wilner, 1988.

This 1988 publication, “The Art Of The Frame”, was issued by Eli Wilner & Company in conjunction with an exhibition on American frames of the Arts and Crafts movement, 1870–1920. The title page identifies the show dates as October 26–November 28, 1988, and credits Eli Wilner as organizer, with introduction and essays by Suzanne Smeaton. Bibliographic references describe the catalog as a 32-page illustrated paperback.

It is a compact but appealing specialist title with real crossover potential. Buyers are drawn to this sort of piece because it offers:

  • an early publication by one of the best-known names in antique frames
  • focused Arts and Crafts content
  • collector and reference usefulness
  • attractive period-inspired cover design
  • strong fit for decorative arts, American art, and interior design libraries

Condition is good to very good overall. Complete, with all pages securely attached. Covers show ordinary age wear, but the book remains sound and presentable.

Current asking prices show a wide spread, from about $44 on eBay to $79 for another copy, with a specialist dealer asking $225. That suggests a small but serious niche market.

After 5 decades in this industry, and with me now vintage too, I still appreciate books like this because they reward the collector who knows that the frame is often half the picture.
