Original first American edition of Gertrude Stein’s Wars I Have Seen, published by Random House, New York, in 1945. “First Printing” is stated on the copyright page.

Stein recounts her experiences and impressions of wartime France, weaving everyday observations together with memories and reflections on occupation, conflict, and liberation. A collectible work connecting American literary history with the civilian experience of World War II.

Dark blue cloth hardcover with printed title labels on the spine and front board. The original portrait dust jacket is included in its surviving separated sections.

Condition: Complete, with all pages attached. Cloth shows rubbing and wear to the corners, edges, and spine ends. Interior and page edges have age toning, with occasional spotting visible in the photographed opening pages. Small bookseller’s label on the rear pastedown.

The dust jacket has extensive damage: front and rear sections are separated, a spine fragment is detached, and portions of the spine are missing. Surviving panels and flaps show tears, chips, creasing, rubbing, soiling, and discoloration. All photographed jacket pieces are included.
