Original circa 1930 Southern Pacific Railroad Shasta Route promotional photographic book featuring striking cover artwork by noted California artist and Southern Pacific illustrator Maurice Logan (1886–1977).
The colorful wraparound cover depicts Mount Shasta, evergreen forests and bald eagles, with SHASTA ROUTE printed across the lower edge.
Produced to promote Southern Pacific's scenic Shasta Route between the San Francisco Bay Area and Portland, Oregon, the book presents an extensive photographic tour of the railroad and the landscapes, cities and engineering features encountered along the route.
This publication contains approximately 65 black-and-white photographs within 76 pages, including railroad operations, mountains, forests, communities and other Western scenery.
One particularly interesting photograph shows the Southern Pacific train ferry Contra Costa crossing Carquinez Strait, carrying railroad locomotives across the water. Other images document the scenery and transportation infrastructure that made the Shasta Route one of Southern Pacific's important Pacific Coast passenger routes.
Maurice Logan became closely associated with Southern Pacific advertising during the 1920s and 1930s, producing some of the railroad's most recognizable Western travel imagery.
Condition: Complete. Original softcover publication showing expected vintage wear, including edge and corner wear, creasing, rubbing, small losses and handling wear to the covers. Interior pages show age-related toning and wear. The illustrated covers remain colorful and visually attractive. Please review photographs carefully for condition.
