Antique 1892 The Locomotive Catechism by Robert Grimshaw – Railroad Engineering Manual with 9 Fold-Out Plates

A scarce and highly appealing antique copy of The Locomotive Catechism by Robert Grimshaw, M.E., published by Norman W. Henley & Co., 132 Nassau Street, New York, with London imprint for E. & F. N. Spon. The copyright page in this copy shows 1892, and catalog references confirm the title as one of Grimshaw’s early locomotive engineering manuals from the early 1890s.

This is exactly the sort of book that crosses over into multiple collecting categories: railroadiana, industrial history, steam power, engineering books, transportation, and decorative antique technical books. Grimshaw’s works became standard practical references, and later market listings for comparable locomotive books with folding plates show how strongly the category performs when copies remain complete and sound.

The standout feature here is the illustration content. This copy is complete with 9 fold-out plates, all present and, per your inspection, without tears or condition problems. The interior fold-outs shown in the photos include locomotive side elevations, sectional views, brake apparatus diagrams, and other technical illustrations that make the book especially desirable for display and research.

Condition report:
Good antique condition overall. Complete example. Binding remains sound and the text block appears stable. Original dark cloth boards show rubbing, scuffing, spotting, and general handling wear. Spine ends have chipping/fray, and corners show wear. Gilt spine lettering remains attractive and readable. Pages are evenly toned with age. The 9 fold-out illustrations are all present and intact, which is a major point in the book’s favor. A very respectable surviving example of an early American locomotive engineering manual.
