A very appealing antique copy of Out to Old Aunt Mary’s by James Whitcomb Riley, published by The Bobbs-Merrill Company, Indianapolis, and illustrated by Howard Chandler Christy with decorations by Margaret Armstrong. Bibliographic records confirm this as a 1904 Bobbs-Merrill edition, and Google Books identifies the book as a 50-page illustrated volume.
This title has excellent crossover appeal because it combines Riley’s nostalgic verse with one of the most collectible names in American illustration. Comparable market examples currently range from the mid-30-dollar range into the mid-50s and higher depending on condition and issue details, with stronger copies and better presentations asking more. This copy lands in the desirable middle ground: complete, attractive, and structurally sound, but with normal exterior wear.
Condition report:
Complete, with all pages attached. Original green cloth boards remain handsome, with gilt titling and decorative cover design still showing well. There is moderate rubbing and handling wear to the cloth, along with some dulling/toning to the spine and mild edge wear. Interior pages shown appear generally clean and bright, with normal age toning. A solid, displayable antique example of one of Riley’s best-known illustrated gift books.
