Original 1880 hardcover Second Report of the United States Entomological Commission for the Years 1878 and 1879, published by the Government Printing Office in Washington, D.C.
Prepared by Charles V. Riley, A. S. Packard Jr., and Cyrus Thomas, the report examines the Rocky Mountain locust and western cricket, their migration and breeding patterns, agricultural damage, insect anatomy, and methods of controlling destructive swarms.
The volume includes original folding maps and detailed scientific illustrations.
Among the surviving maps are a large color folding map of western North America showing locust breeding grounds and vegetation zones, and a folding map illustrating the Rocky Mountain locust migrations of 1877.
IMPORTANT: The original smaller black-and-white Map No. 1 is missing. The remaining maps, illustrations, and text are present.
1881 PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION
The front endpaper contains a handwritten presentation inscription dated May 1881, apparently from “Hon. E. C. Campbell” to “S. J. Davis.” The identities have not been independently verified. An ink name stamp also appears on the title page.
CONDITION
Original antique cloth hardcover with rubbing, edge wear, and wear at the spine ends.
Map No. 1 is missing. Some of the surviving folding maps have slight edge tears, and a small area of paper loss or surface damage is visible near one map's attachment.
The interior shows age toning and occasional marks. Please examine all photographs carefully for the condition of the binding, maps, inscription, and pages.
