This scarce 19th-century religious novel tells the story of Stephen Grattan, a reformed alcoholic whose experiences explore temperance, alcoholism, faith, redemption, family hardship and personal reform. The subject makes the book particularly interesting as an example of post-Civil War American temperance and Sunday-school literature.
The volume retains its original dark green embossed cloth binding with decorative gilt spine lettering and ornamentation. An engraved frontispiece depicts a dramatic scene from the story and is captioned:
“Then from the bridge there arose a cry.”

CONDITION: Complete with all pages present. Binding is loose and should be handled with care. Covers exhibit age-related rubbing, spotting, corner and edge wear, and wear at the head and foot of the spine. Gilt decoration remains visible. Interior pages have expected age toning with moderate to substantial foxing and spotting, particularly around the frontispiece, tissue guard and title page. No restoration or cleaning has been attempted.
