1865 Bank of Newburgh NY Draft – American Bank Note Co. Civil War 5¢ Revenue Stamp.
 
Original May 10, 1865 Bank of Newburgh, New York financial document, beautifully engraved by the American Bank Note Co., New York, and retaining its original 5-cent U.S. First Issue Inland Exchange revenue stamp.
This Civil War-era banking document features an elaborate engraved design with large BANK OF NEWBURGH lettering and a detailed pastoral vignette depicting cattle standing in water with additional livestock, trees and buildings in the background.
Affixed near the upper portion of the document is an original 5¢ red/brown United States First Issue Inland Exchange revenue stamp featuring George Washington, Scott R27c. These federal documentary revenue stamps were introduced during the Civil War period to collect taxes on financial and legal transactions.
The document is extensively handwritten in period ink, with signatures, numerical notations and additional markings. The reverse also contains period handwritten accounting and endorsement notations.
Of additional historical interest, the document dates from the period when the original Bank of Newburgh was transitioning into the National Bank of Newburgh, while this engraved form continues to carry the earlier BANK OF NEWBURGH name.
